Hello. I’m Kerry Nesbit—author and owner of Kerry Nesbit, Incorporated, publisher of Your First Bulldog.
When I got my first bulldogs in 1991—littermates named Emily and Stuart—I was lucky. Their breeder introduced me not only to the breed, but to the world of dog showing.
I didn’t win many blue ribbons because, as it turned out, Stuey and Emily weren’t the greatest specimens, measured against the breed standard. What I did get out of going to all those shows and hanging out with the bulldog experts I met there was a great education in giving my beloved bullies the special care they needed to live the longest, healthiest, happiest lives possible.
Emily and Stuart also got me started training and teaching classes at the Winston-Salem Dog Training Club. I'm still teaching a class every session and taking classes with my German Shepherd rescue, Jack.
Stuey was especially fun to train and was well-known at the club for his rock-solid stationary exercises, and for scratching off on the recall. As the only obedience-trained bulldog anyone knew of in town, he even got a part in a television pilot filmed here.
I showed Stuart and Emily only briefly in conformation, but mostly just enjoyed them as fabulously cool companions. As limited as my dog-showing experience is, I did learn a lot about the breed, hanging around at the dog shows those several years.
In creating my bulldog-related products, I hope to give new and aspiring bulldog owners access to that same kind of mentoring by interviewing bulldog experts.
I
have a master’s degree in journalism and business and a bachelor’s
degree in radio, television and motion pictures—both from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While
in graduate school, I studied marketing and advertising in the
UNC School of Business. I wrote my master's
thesis on how words and images work together in print.
I started my company as a writing and graphic design business in
1983 after three years as a writer-editor-photographer for an
insurance company. In 2007, I decided to shift from selling services to creating and marketing information products.
